Stay alert, confident, and aware of your surroundings. Walk purposefully and make eye contact with people around you. Trust your instincts, if you have an uneasy feeling take another route.
Avoid alleys, short cuts & vacant lots. Stick to well-lighted, busy streets.
Walk with a companion whenever possible.
Avoid displaying large amounts of cash. Use ATM's during daylight hours only.
If you are being followed, abruptly change directions, stay in a well lighted area, and seek safety in a public building, make noise, attract attention to you and the person that is following you. Have your personal alarm or pepper spray out and ready.
If alone, have you cell phone ready. You can even pre-dial "9-1-1" so all you have to do is hit "send".
Always be ready with your personal alarm, stun gun, or pepper spray. It will do you no good if you can't get to it when you are already panicked.
Park in well-lit areas. When you are returning to your car, walk directly to it with keys ready.
Do not park where there are groups of strangers "hanging-out" or next to someone just sitting in their car.
Park next to cars the same size or smaller than yours so that you can easily see your car from a few rows away.
